A financial analyst gathers data and information about what they need to analyze, such as historical financials, general ledger data, stock price information, statistics, industry research, and any other type of quantitative data. The information is gathered from various sources such as the company’s internal databases or third-party systems. Once the data is gathered it’s entered into Excel or some other database to make sense of it. Usually this means sorting the numbers by data & category, adding formulas and functions to make sure it’s dynamic, and using consistent formatting styles so that it’s easy to read and understand.
When the data is all clean and organized, a financial analyst starts analyzing past information and historical results. This typically includes looking at metrics like gross margin, net margin, year-over-year (YoY) growth rates, and many others. An analyst will look for trends and benchmark the performance against other companies in the same industry. This is one of the biggest factors of what a financial analyst does. How a company will perform requires both art and science, certain assumptions have to be made. Common forecasting methods include year-over-year growth rates.
In addition to being good with numbers, financial analysts generate insights and recommendations on how to improve business operations. Some examples are ways to cut costs, opportunities to grow revenue, how to increase your market share, and much more. These recommendations are presented to the CEO, the CFO, other executives, and/or the board of directors. Financial models typically start by linking bank statements, general ledger, P&L statements and then layering on more advanced types of financial models such as cash flow analysis, internal planning models and Mergers & Acquisition (M&A) models.
